The 2016 recreational red snapper season in Gulf of Mexico state waters closes July 11, with the last day of harvest being July 10. The season will reopen Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, and on Labor Day. This season will help maintain fishing opportunities for recreational anglers in state waters and provide additional fall weekend fishing days. During the past fiscal year Whitetails Unlimited provided more than $75,000 in grant funding to school systems for the National Archery in the Schools Program. In addition, WTU became a scholarship sponsor for the NASP National 3-D Tournament held in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this month. Whitetails Unlimited has been a steadfast supporter of NASP over the last decade, and the number of WTU grants has steadily increased over that time. Whitetails Unlimited National Headquarters along with its Northeast Iowa Chapter is offering an incentive to landowners and hunters who cooperate with the Iowa DNR in obtaining samples to test for Chronic Wasting Disease in Allamakee County this hunting season. During the 2013 season, an isolated case of CWD was found in a wild deer harvested south of Harpers Ferry in the Yellowstone River State Forest. The DNR has tested more than 51,000 samples statewide since 2002 and has tested more than 1,100 samples in this immediate area. The 2013 sample was the first positive result in the state. LCI Derby 31 Huge Success Colchester, VT – 2012 was a great year for the 31 LCI Father’s Day Derby presented by Yamaha. After battling record-setting lake levels in 2011, this year’s crop of anglers were blessed with warm, sunny weather all weekend. The numbers say it all. 5,762 anglers from 24 states competed for $94,807.78 in cash, $50,925 in boats, and $59,990 in merchandise. U.S. Open Matchfishing Championship Opens Today Elkhart, Ind., – The United States Freshwater Fishing Federation (USF3) is hosting the U.S. Open Matchfishing Championship on June 8-10 at McNaughton Park. Match anglers from across the country will vie for six spots on Team USA.
