Sturgeon spawning run updateAttention Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts: It appears that the 2017 lake sturgeon spawning run on the Wolf River, and other tributaries to the Winnebago System, is pretty well wrapped up. Our crew did handle 95 fish below the Shawano Paper Mill Dam yesterday, but things are much slower today. I plan to send out a more detailed report later this week with the number of fish handled this spring at each location. Hopefully you were able to get out and see the sturgeon spawning this spring and enjoy this truly unique event. Ryan Koenigs Senior Fisheries … Continue reading Sturgeon Spawning Run Update
Attention Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts: Yesterday we had two crews tagging below the Shawano Paper Mill Dam that combined to handle 470 fish. The was the 2nd big tagging day at Shawano and we are now past peak spawning activity. We have handled some very nice fish over the last few days, and I will send out some photos once we wrap up the assessment and get back in the office, likely next week. The sturgeon spawning run continues on Friday morning as fish are spawning at 5-10 sites in the upper reaches of the Wolf River between Leeman and … Continue reading Sturgeon Spawning Run Update – Tagging from April 20, 2017
Dear Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts: The lake sturgeon spawning run on the Winnebago System continues to move fast. In fact, we had two crews today tagging fish below the Shawano Paper Mill Dam today. Typically we aren’t seeing spawning fish until later in the spawning run, but this is the 2nd year in a row that fish have been at Shawano on the 3rd day of the run on the Wolf River. Between the two crews today we handled 370 sturgeon below the Shawano Dam. We likely would have handled more fish had we not been collecting eggs and sperm … Continue reading Sturgeon Spawning Run Update
Attention Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts: The 2017 sturgeon spawning run is underway and we had two crews out tagging fish today. One crew handled 138 fish at Bamboo Bend in Shiocton and the other crew handled 140 fish at the Sturgeon Trail on County X in New London. Fish were spawning heavily at both sites today, but I suspect that fish will still be at these locations tomorrow yet. At this point it looks like this year’s run is going to go pretty fast on the Wolf River, so I can’t stress enough to make plans to get out and … Continue reading 2017 Sturgeon Spawning Run Update
