FISH STORY: Guide’s Perspective on Ice Electronics 11-17-2015

FEATURE___________________________________________________ A Guide’s Perspective on Ice Fishing Electronics  By Maynard Lee  The frozen surfaces of lakes, rivers and reservoirs across the ice belt represent the final frontier in angling. Ice thicknesses that are often measured in feet, air temperatures that hover near zero, and frigid winds that often carry frozen precipitation all represent physical, and even psychological barriers to ice fishing success. Over the last 5 years, however, advances in marine electronics that were initially designed to assist open-water anglers have begun to breach the final frontier, providing shelter-bound ice fishers the technological advances they need to enjoy sustained success throughout … Continue reading FISH STORY: Guide’s Perspective on Ice Electronics 11-17-2015

Local Column River Currents by Gary A. Engberg Clements Fishing Barge Reopens for Fall 8-21-2014

If you’re looking for a fishing spot this fall where you don’t have to worry about bringing a boat or trying to find fish in an unfamiliar location, then the Clement Fishing Barge on the Mississippi River is the place for you, family, and friends. I also highly recommend fishing Clements if you’re a senior citizen or a family with children because it’s simple, convenient, and provides very good fall fishing for many river species of fish. Local Column River Currents Huge Flathead Catfish Caught 8-12-2015

In last week’s column, I wrote about how August and September, when the weather is hot and muggy, can be a good time to fish for catfish. Catfish do not get the respect that they deserve from many anglers who struggle this time of the year when most gamefish like walleyes, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and muskies are hard to catch. Most gamefish are spending a majority of their time in deeper and cooler water. They still will go shallow to find forage fish, but this is usually early or late in the day or at night. Where you … Continue reading Local Column River Currents Huge Flathead Catfish Caught 8-12-2015

Committed to restoring warriors and their families.   “Especially my kids noticed the positive residual effects of kayak fishing.”  Randy Hay is an active duty sergeant based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
