ELY, Minn. – Public lands sportsmen today strongly criticized efforts by a Minnesota lawmaker to reignite a controversial proposal by an international mining company to develop large-scale copper mines within the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the most-visited wilderness area in the United States. Rep. Rick Nolan is in meetings with the Interior Department in an attempt to green-light sulfide-ore copper mining leases located on the edge of the Boundary Waters wilderness. MICHIGAN UNITED CONSERVATION CLUBS UPDATE | NRC Bans Chocolate in Bear Bait Friend — A little over a year ago, Michigan’s bear hunting organizations asked the Natural Resources Commission to consider banning chocolate in bear bait to reduce the risk of harming non-target wildlife. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can be toxic to bears and other wildlife in sufficient quantities. Organizations including the Michigan Bear Hunters Association, the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation and the U.P. Bear Houndsmen Association sponsored a resolution supporting a restriction on chocolate in bear bait through the Michigan United Conservation Clubs policy process. RMEF Grants Benefit Habitat, Hunting Heritage and Research in Minnesota

MISSOULA, Mont.—The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation awarded $72,794 in grant funding toward conservation and hunting heritage projects in the state of Minnesota. There are 13 projects that benefit nearly 9,000 acres of elk habitat and outdoor/sporting enthusiasts in Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Douglas, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Marshall, Morrison and Roseau Counties. There are also seven additional projects of statewide benefit. “There was a time more than 100 years ago that historic elk range covered the entire state of Minnesota.
