Winter is not done yet, especially across the north woods. Help monitor populations of barred and other owl species by joining the 2018 Western Great Lakes Owl Survey. Photo credit: Ryan Brady
It was a slow week for bird migration due to cooler temperatures and lack of warm, southerly winds. Waterfowl continue to provide the greatest birding opportunities wherever open water allows. Rarities were few this week, best probably being a harlequin duck in Sheboygan. The week ahead also looks cool with persistent northerly winds so migration should again be somewhat limited.
A few more volunteers are needed to conduct the two-hour roadside night surveys. Learn details, see available routes, and sign up at wiatri.net/projects/birdroutes/owls.htm.
