Doc’s New Classes Added

gengberg January 7th, 2009

Doc has added more classes at Cabela’s Rogers, MN.

The Lowrance School will teach you how to get the most out of your Lowrance. You will learn sonar, GPS, and mapping cards. The class is interactive and Doc has collected an extensive library of Aqua-Vu underwater video and Lowrance sonar recording to help you visualize what the sonar actually ‘sees”. You will also learn all the useful features of your Lowrance to help you catch more fish.

The Mapping Class will show you how to create your own depth contour maps using your Lowrance how to display these maps on your Lowrance. You will learn how to view interesting maps on your computer and create waypoints from that map for your GPS. One example is that will get to see aerial photos of Lake Oahe when it was 37 feet below normal pool level and create waypoints on the rock piles that are exposed.

***Wausau/Central Wisconsin area (MARATHON COUNTY, including the communities
of Kronenwetter, Mosinee, Rib Mountain, Rothschild, Schofield, Wausau, and
Weston) — as of December 22, 2008:

(Head): Strong walleye and panfish bite, with very good northern action in
the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area.

The walleye bite in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area is still going strong
with reports of many fish in the 20 to 28 inch slot being caught. Successful
anglers are catching fish in shallow water, two to six feet deep as they
target fish associated with weeds. Medium shiners used on tip-ups seem to
be producing the best, but anglers are also reporting good catches being
made on jig rods as anglers seek out active fish. Strong bites and good
catches after dark are being reported.

The panfish action in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin are is going strong with
many anglers reporting good catches of big, bull bluegills. Fish are being
caught on small jigs tipped with waxworms or mousies. The crappie bite has
been absolutely on fire with some very large slab crappies being caught on
area lakes. Anglers using tip-downs with small crappie minnow are reporting
good success during the dawn and twilight hours, while jig anglers have
caught fish throughout the day using a locator and hole hopping to locate
active fish.

The northern bite on Wausau/Central Wisconsin lakes continues to be very
good. Anglers are reporting the best catches associated with shallow weed
beds in three to five feet of water, using large golden shiners beneath
tip-ups. Although often overlooked by trophy northern anglers, the
Wausau/Central Wisconsin are contains some true, giant specimens just
waiting to be caught. Come up and gets yours it’s waiting for you.

Even with the cold weather, anglers are reminded to use caution when
venturing out onto Wausau/Central Wisconsin ice. Enjoy the wonderful
opportunities that winter and ice fishing bring to the Wausau/Central
Wisconsin area in completely safety!

And remember, the walleye, northern, and bass seasons on most of the waters
in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area REMAIN OPEN throughout the year; and
unlike so many lakes further north that have daily walleye bag limits of two
or three fish, the walleye bag limit on most of the waters of the
Wausau/Central Wisconsin area remains at FIVE (5) fish.

With such a wealth of opportunities, it’s important for anglers to practice
catch-and-release for everything but a few for the frying pan. This simple
and mindful conservation will insure that the legendary fishing in the
Wausau/Central Wisconsin area will continue for generations to come. (This
report based on interview with guide Joel DeBoer of Wisconsin Angling
Adventures).

Safari Club International and Salvation Army Team Up for 2009 Sportsman Against Hunger Feed the Hungry Feast

SCI Foundation and The Salvation Army Team Up for 2009 Sportsmen Against Hunger Feed the Hungry Feast

Tucson, AZ - On Tuesday evening, Jan. 20, 2009, some 1,200 homeless, under-housed, and hungry people from the Reno, Nevada area will again enjoy a feast of ground venison and all the accoutrements thanks to over 500 pounds of meat donated by hunters attending Safari Club International’s 37th Annual Hunters’ Convention in Reno. This Sportsmen Against Hunger contribution of wild game meat by SCI’s Northern Nevada Chapter is an example of how the 18-year-old SCI Foundation program shares nature’s bounty worldwide.

The Sportsmen Against Hunger Feed the Hungry Feast, held in conjunction with The Salvation Army, will take place downtown, courtesy of the Reno Events Center on the corner of Fourth and Center Streets, and with the help of sponsors including C & M Food Distributing, Model Dairy, SportServices, Truckee Sour Dough, Carson Valley Inn, SYSCO, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Dept. SCIF’s 45-foot Sensory Safari trailer, which provides a tactile exploration of wildlife, will also be on hand for participants and volunteers to experience, thanks to the generosity of the SCI Redding Regional Chapter in California.

“SCIF is always excited to host the Sportsmen Against Hunger Feed the Hungry Feast in Reno,” said SCI President Merle Shepard. “Hunters have the opportunity to utilize venison, a resource that they have hunted, to provide high protein meals for others.”

Food at the event will be served by over 160 SCI members, local volunteers, and Salvation Army Advisory Board members, and will be prepared by chefs from the El Dorado Hotel Casino under the direction of Executive Chef Troy Cannan.

“SCIF hopes that greater exposure of hunter led programs like the Sportsmen Against Hunger Feed the Hungry Feast at the 2009 Convention will encourage more sportsmen and women to help prevent hunger through a passion they already have, hunting,” added SCI Foundation Humanitarian Services Chairman Gene Rurka.

Through SCIF’s myriad humanitarian programs, SCI chapters and individual members demonstrate the highest levels of philanthropy by directly reaching out to people in need throughout the world. Whether it involves feeding millions of hungry each year, offering free healthcare and supplies to impoverished communities, introducing blind children to the wonders of wildlife, or helping the terminally ill or disabled fulfill lifelong hunting wishes; SCIF is committed to its charitable tenet of giving.

SCI’s 2009 Annual Hunters’ Convention January 21-24th is the ultimate hunters’ market, bringing together more than 25,000 sportsmen and 1,100 exhibitors from around the world in more than 600,000 square-feet of space designed for hunters. Sportsmen and sportswomen interested in learning more and registering for the 2009 Annual Hunters’ Convention may do so at www.showsci.org or by calling 1(888)-SCI-Hunt (742-4868).

Northwoods Fishing/Outdoor Report by Naomi Shapiro for December 8, 2008

gengberg December 8th, 2008

As of December 8, 2008:

Fishing, Outdoor, and Event Reports for
Eagle River, Wisconsin;
Wausau/Central Wisconsin area;
Lake of the Woods and Rainy River out of Sportsman’s Lodge (Baudette,
Minnesota).
—–

—–

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES:

– Northern and perch action very good to excellent, with walleye bite good
in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area, and ice conditions improving. Caution
is still very much required.

– Ice fishing houses up and great ice fishing starts on Lake of the Woods
out of Sportsman’s Lodge, Baudette, Minnesota.

– Excellent tip-up action for both walleyes and northern, with crappies
very active in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area. Backwaters and bays have
some decent ice, but caution is a necessity because current causes ice
thickness to vary significantly.

WEEKLY OUTDOOR AND FISHING REPORTS, and current calendars:

***Eagle River, Wis. (VILAS COUNTY) — as of December 8, 2008:

(Head): Northern and perch action very good to excellent, with walleye bite
good in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area, and ice conditions improving.
Caution is still very much required.

Ice conditions are improving in the Eagle River area, but caution and common
sense are definitely required. Don’t go out alone. Note that this week’s
report recommends fishing in 15 feet of water or less. That’s because the
ice becomes unsafe after you reach the first break edge. Don’t forget that!
Using one of the Eagle River area’s top-flight licensed guides is always a
good idea. You’ll get some great fishing, and be safe on the ice.

Northern action in the Eagle River area is good to excellent, with a mixed
bag on sizes. Fish 15 feet of water or less in and around the weeds., using
large shiners under tip-ups, or jig with larger spoons.

Perch action is good to excellent in the Eagle River area. Fish 15 feet of
water in and around the weeds. Use a small tear drop jig in bright orange
or chartreuse. Waxies, spikes and crappie minnows are all working.

The walleye bite in the Eagle River area is good. Fish 15 feet of water or
less over hardbottom areas in front of weeds. Use a tip-up with a walleye
sucker or medium shiner, or jig with a spoon tipped with a fathead minnow.
