When Kotaro Kiriyama won the Bassmaster Elite event on Lake Erie in early August, his method of fishing over open water bait balls astonished many of the BASS/ESPN media commentators who had never seen any fishing done like that before.

It reminded me of a four-part story I wrote in 2006. I had never published that story on the Internet before, but Kiriyama’s success motivated me to track it down and post it online for you today.

NPAA Members Dominate PWT Can-Am Challenge

VALLEY CITY, ND, August 20th, 2008: The National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA), a non-profit organization focused on growing the sport of fishing and increasing the professionalism of its members, would like to congratulate all the NPAA members from the US and Canada on their professionalism and participation at the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail “Artificials Only” Super Pro Can-Am Challenge on Lake Wabigoon out of Dryden, ONT. August 13-15^th, 2008.

Along with artificial baits mandatory, the Can-Am challenge was unique in that a team captain from Canada and the USA picked 24 Contestants to fish against each other and themselves. Each team member was matched up with a different co-angler each day. Team Canada hailed victory over the USA by a margin of 9.32lbs. (592.27lbs. Canada and 582.95 USA). 731 fish were brought to the scales over the course of the event. This was a great testament for artificial baits, as PWT and NPAA supporter Berkley Gulp! was used extensively by most anglers. Continue Reading »

THE SCENIC WONDERS OF LAKE POWELL

Lake Powell in Arizona is considered the most scenic bass
lake in the world. This week’s story on Lake Powell is not
so much about fishing (except for one really good tip you’ll

ATTENTION KIDS! DRESS UP LIKE YOUR FAVORITE SPORTSMAN WITH THE SPORTSMAN CHANNEL AT THE GREAT OUTDOORS FESTIVAL!

 New Berlin, WI - (July 22, 2008) - Bring your kids to the 10^th Annual Great Outdoors Festival in Oshkosh, Wis. on August 22^nd - 24th at the EAA Convention Grounds and stop by The Sportsman Channel tent to dress up like your favorite hunter, angler or waterfowler. Show hours are Friday noon to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Parking is free at this event and tickets are $17 for adults and $8 for children at the gate. Children 5 and under and dogs on a leash can get in for free.

The Sportsman Channel’s tent is between hangers C and D on the main Festival grounds. Kids will have a chance to dress up like their favorite hunter, fisherman, or angler and pose for a picture. The photos will be available to take home the same day.
