Clements Fishing Barge on the Mississippi River at Genoa, Wisconsin 10-23-08

gengberg October 30th, 2008

Fishing is finally picking up. More fish have been caught in the last couple of days then all fall I think. The water temperature is getting a lot colder, around 52 degrees and should continue to fall with the colder weather. Walleye and sauger are hitting on hair jigs, blade baits and floating jigs. Most people are using minnows with their jigs, the fish seem to want the live bait right now. Still a lot of small fish, one fisherman said he caught 60 small sauger and walleye. Northern are still around too and even some crappie have been coming in. Looks like we are having a late fall run this year. Weather looks good too, nice and brisk with some cloudy days. Perfect walleye fishing weather.

of trophies going to 32.5 inches and 12.5 pounds, with northerns and slab
crappies starting to hit strongly, on the south end of Lake of the Woods,
out of Sportsman's Lodge, Baudette, Minnesota.

-- Excellent northern and crappie action, with good bite for walleyes and
smalles, and musky and largemouth slow, in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

-- Musky, walleye, smallies and panfish all hitting very strongly, and bow
hunters targeting trophy bucks in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area.

- - EDITOR'S NOTE: Information for all upcoming Wisconsin hunting and
trapping seasons is posted at the end of these reports, with gracious thanks
to guide Phil Schweik of Hooksetters Fishing & Hunting Guide Services,
Mosinee, for providing the excellent information.
-----

2. WEEKLY OUTDOOR AND FISHING REPORTS, and current calendars:

***Eagle River, Wis. (VILAS COUNTY) -- as of September 29, 2008:

(Head): Excellent northern and crappie action, with good bite for walleyes
and smalles, and musky and largemouth slow, in the Eagle River, Wisconsin
area.:

Northern hitting strongly in the Eagle River area. Fish weeds in two to
eight feet of water using a spinner bait. The northerns are mainly average
size or smaller.

The crappie bite in the Eagle River area is excellent. Fish are going 12 to
13 inches max. Fish humps, or cribs in eight to ten feet of water, or the
crappies are suspending out in open water at varying depths, going as deep
as 15 to 18 feet (try varying depths on the water column, remembering that
crappie only bite up, never down). Use a crappie minnow.

Decent action for walleyes in the Eagle River area. The Eagle River Chain
of 28 lakes (largest freshwater chain of lakes in the world), or Kentuck
Lake have been producing. Target weed areas, and fish 15 to 25 feet during
the day, using a jig and a minnow. As evening comes on the walleyes will
come in anywhere from eight to twelve feet. Use a jig and a minnow.
Evening walleyes will also hit small surface lures (three to four inch
Rapalas or X-Raps for example), being ifshed over sand bars, rock bars and
humps in eight feet of water or less.

Smallies are providing a good bite in the Eagle River area. Fish 20 feet or
deeper (depending on the lake), targeting humps and rocks. Use a three inch
minnow for best results.

Musky are slow in the Eagle River area. During the day fish 15 feet of
water, around weeds or rocks. Use a Suzy Sucker, Bulldawg or glide bait.
In the morning and evening, topwaters are picking up some fish in water as
shallow as three to five feet. Some anglers are starting to use smaller
suckers, going 11 inches or smaller.

Largemouth action has been limited in the Eagle River area. Fish minnows or
p;lastic worms in the weeds in eight feet of water or less.

Clements Fishing Barge 9-8-08

gengberg September 9th, 2008

Fishing was pretty good today, they caught walleye, sauger, northern pike, bluegills and yes a few sheephead.  Catfish have been fairly plentiful as well.  Most of the walleye and sauger were caught on hair jigs, purple or blue chartreuse.  Most were tipped with minnows.  Some were caught on blade baits too.  Water temp has dropped two degrees in one night!  This will certainly help bring in more walleye and sauger.  A lot of bait fish near the dam already and around the barge. ***Eagle River, Wis. (VILAS COUNTY) -- as of September 1, 2008:

(Head): Northern bite excellent, with very good musky, smallie, largemouth
and panfish bite, and walleye hitting fair to good, in the Eagle River,
Wisconsin area.

Northern are putting on an excellent bite in the Eagle River area. Fish 10
feet of water or less in and around the weeds. Use a small Mepps, or a
Rapala floating minnow.

Musky action is very good to excellent in the Eagle River area. Fish weed
edges and break edges in 20 feet of water or less. Small bucktails,
crankbaits and topwaters are all working.

Smallies are hanging in 20 feet of water on hardbottom edges in the Eagle
River area and putting on a strong bite. Use 3 to 4 inch tube jigs, or a
lipless crankbait. Chartreuse and fire tiger are the hot colors.

Largemouth are still holding tight to structure in the Eagle River area, and
providing very good action. Fish piers, docks, drowned wood and heavy
weeds. Use a 7 inch ribbon tail worm, a lizard or weedless frog.

Panfish - -crappies, bluegills and perch - -are all hanging together in the
Eagle River area, and are providing very good numbers, and some real nice
sized fish, even while doing some sorting. Fish 10 feet of water or less in
the weeds. Use a crappie minnow, or chunk of crawler under a small jig or
under a slip bobber.

The walleye action in the Eagle River area remains fair to good. Fish 25
feet of water or less, with bottom ranging from mud flats to weed edges.
Use a jig and a minnow, crawler or leech. While action is day dependent,
the bite will peak early or late in the day.

Now is the time to start getting your gear in shape for the upcoming bear
and deer seasons. The Eagle River area provides excellent hunting
opportunities. I am an avid hunter and will be happy to answer your
questions, without any obligation (Mat Hegy, Guides Choice Pro Shop, Eagle
River).

Local Column River Currents 8-11-08 Local Fishing Report Included

gengberg August 11th, 2008

There have been so many local fishing events going on in recent weeks and months that I haven’t talked that much about the local fishing on the Wisconsin River and Lake Wisconsin. Wisconsin River SunsetThe Lower Wisconsin River (LWR) has been good most of the spring and summer. The high water in the spring opened up the river a little more and made many areas deeper than previous years. What once was 4 or 5 feet is now 6 or 7 feet. Many areas that weren’t fishable the last few seasons now are good for fishing. Rock bars that were touch and go for fishing are now open and navigable. There also are some new areas of structure, caused by the high water, like log jams, fallen trees, and sand bars.

The water level and current flow have remained above normal (normal has been low the last four or five years) most of the summer and this cannot all be attributed to the heavy rains and Lake Delton disaster of June. Remember, that we also had a gooWalleye TPd spring for precipitation too. River fish and that includes most species besides walleyes and saugers like a little current and flow to bring food to them while they wait in ambush behind any available structure. But, periods of high water have even prevented many of us from fishing regularly during both the spring and early summer. Continue Reading »

Fishing Report from Clements Fishing Barge at Genoa, Wisconsin

gengberg August 10th, 2008

Hey all, we will be open the end of the month on August 29th. Looking forward to a great fall. There are a lot of fish still around the barge. Tons of northern, bass, bluegill and a few sauger. A lot of baitfish in the water as well, should be a good ending to a strange year.Walleyes and Saugers Clements Fshing Barge

My son Cameron will be doing most of the fishing reports this fall as I will probably be unable to type. Hurt my arm and will have surgery this week we think. So, Cameron will be able to practice his typing and probably tying my shoes for me too…ha… Have a good rest of summer.

Local Column River Currents 8-2-08

gengberg August 5th, 2008

This children’s fishing event, that so many people were waiting for, took place this past Saturday, August 2nd, was a huge success for all those that participated and attended the weigh-in. The eighth annual “Take an Adult Fishing Tournament” had over 80 teams which consisted of at least one adult (parent, grandparent, brother, sister, mentor) and one or more child. Take an Adult fishing tournament 8-2-08There were numerous teams that had more than one child fishing which brought the total number of participants to over 200 individuals. This is about the same number of teams and families that take part every year in this summer event.Take an Adult Fishing Tourament 8-2-08

The threat earlier in the week of temperatures over 90 degrees never materialized and Saturday’s sunrise brought a wonderful day with blue skies, lower humidity, and a high temperature of about 80. You couldn’t have asked for a better day for you and your children to go fishing and spend some “quality” time together. This was and has been what this annual event is all about, getting family and friends together on the water in a drug and alcohol free-event and having fun while fishing.Take an Adult Fishing Tournament big Crowd 8-2-08

All of the teams were at the Rivers Edge Mall and Wilderness Fish and Game by 6:00 AM and after a brief rules meeting and a prayer by Pastor Dwight Pulsfus, they were all off and on their way to fish the waters of their choice. This event is held on the honor system as long as all of the state’s rules and regulations are followed. A brief discussion of the revised VHS rules was given and all teams were again informed that all fish must be dead and bait (minnows) could not be saved to be used on any other state waters. Gollon’s Bait Farm of Dodgeville came through and donated most if not all the nightcrawlers and wax worms that were used. This great local company continues to come through for most of the children events that I’m part of and should be given a special thank you. Continue Reading »
