Bounty Fishing Tournament for Lung Cancer

gengberg November 10th, 2008

BountyFishing.com holding charity fishing event
BountyFishing.com, home of the world’s largest fishing tournament, announced today that it will be holding a charity fishing event to benefit Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA), the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to patient support and advocacy for those living with or at risk for lung cancer. “Bounty Fishing for Lung Cancer” will take place from November 24-30th, during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and 100% of the proceeds will go to LCA. The tournament will follow BountyFishing.com’s usual “catch anywhere, submit online” format.

“My mother Marleen, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer at age 49 and died six months later”, said Richard Shafter, founder and CEO of BountyFishing.com. “It was my painful, personal experience with this disease that prompted my desire to raise awareness and funds for Lung Cancer Alliance.”

Besides educating federal & state policy leaders on the need for greater resources for lung cancer research, LCA also works to raise national awareness, and offers free patient support programs. Among these programs are a toll-free information hotline, a toll-free clinical trials matching service, a peer-to-peer phone buddy program, and an on-line survivors community.

Anglers are encouraged to register at http://www.bountyfishing.com/tournament/select and to invite family and friends to support this very important cause.

Donations can be made at http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/donate/donate_online.htm where gifts should be made in honor of “Bounty Fishing for Lung Cancer”.

The species for this charitable tournament will be Largemouth Bass North, Largemouth Bass South, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Red Drum, and Sea Trout. Complete rules and restrictions are available at http://www.bountyfishing.com/enterprise/rules.

Some statistics about lung cancer:
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, taking approximately 1.2 million lives worldwide every year.
Lung cancer causes more deaths than the next four most common cancers combined (colon, breast, pancreatic, and prostate).

In 1987 lung cancer surpassed breast cancer to become the leading cause of cancer deaths in women.
Lung cancer will kill nearly 70,000 women in the U.S. this year, which is more than breast and ovarian cancers combined and over 90,000 men in the U.S., which is more than colon and prostate cancers combined.
Lung cancer is deadlier to women than breast cancer yet breast cancer gets almost 10 times more research funding per death than lung cancer.

In recent years, anglers have been making an overall trend toward bigger lures of every kind - heavier, bulkier jigs, longer 10-inch worms, beefy swimbaits, supersize jerkbaits, giant spoons and so on. Everything’s gotten bigger.

It wasn’t long ago that such massive baits would’ve been considered way too big to be bass lures. The swimbait craze is what’s helped change that thinking, and now bigger and bigger baits of every variety are in vogue. We’re rewriting the book on what’s practical in terms of lure sizes for bass fishing.

Part of the overall trend to ‘big up’ baits has been that our 7-inch Senkos are being used by more anglers in more situations and places than ever before, which is good. Our 7-inch Senkos do catch a better grade of fish for you.
Double Up Your Swimbait Success with 7-inch Senkos

One special tactic used by swimbait anglers is to toss back 7-inch Senkos as ‘follow up’ baits when fishing big swimbaits.

Big bass that follow but do not strike swimbaits are a common (and heart-breaking) occurrence.

Swimbait anglers have been jonesing for some way to convert these frequent followers into strikers, and the 7-inch Senko is it.

It’s simple. Keep a big Senko rigged (either wacky, weightless or weighted Texas rig) and ready to throw back at big followers.

Toss one back into the area (either where the big bass was last seen, was coming from or headed to) and enjoy a second shot at finicky behemoth bass that follow but won’t bite swimbaits.

Some anxious anglers throw back right away with the Senkos, right in on the follower while the fish is still visible/active. Others coolly wait to calm their nerves. Let the brute begin to regret it missed the potential meal that got away… then lob the big, fat, succulent Senko in front of the sulking trophy after a wait of one to several minutes!

It’s always a gamble, but ’sleeping on them’ by waiting even longer - up to 5-10 minutes without casting before you follow-up with the big Senko can be intense - if you have the steely wherewithal to wisely wait.

Clements Fishing Barge on the Mississippi River at Genoa, Wisconsin 10-23-08

gengberg October 30th, 2008

Fishing is finally picking up. More fish have been caught in the last couple of days then all fall I think. The water temperature is getting a lot colder, around 52 degrees and should continue to fall with the colder weather. Walleye and sauger are hitting on hair jigs, blade baits and floating jigs. Most people are using minnows with their jigs, the fish seem to want the live bait right now. Still a lot of small fish, one fisherman said he caught 60 small sauger and walleye. Northern are still around too and even some crappie have been coming in. Looks like we are having a late fall run this year. Weather looks good too, nice and brisk with some cloudy days. Perfect walleye fishing weather.

Pickwick Bass Report from Steve Hacker 10-21-08

gengberg October 24th, 2008

Though I’ve had my shad tank bungied in the boat for a few weeks now, I have
yet to throw my cast net to catch any shad to use for live bait. Not only has
it not been necessary to catch fish, I’m not even sure that live bait would be
more effective right now. They guys I’ve talked to that are using/trying to use
live bait have reported that 1) decent sized bait has been hard to catch, and
2) they haven’t been catching many smallmouths on the shad they have used. But
I know the day is coming, as the water continues to cool, that it will be
necessary to break out the live bait gear to have the best chance at catching a
nice string of bass.Joseph Poole and I felt sure as we launched yesterday that Monday would be the
day. The strongest cold front of the year had just passed through, temp was
down in the upper 30’s and, once the thick fog burned off, it was a bright
bluebird day with a slick mirror finish on the water’s surface; classic post
frontal conditions, considered some of the toughest to catch fish.

The thick fog kept us from making our first scheduled run, so we went to an
area near the ramp and started throwing grubs. Joseph caught a really nice spot
and a nice smallmouth on a green pumpkin grub before the fog lifted, along with
a couple of big drum and a big rock bass. Then the fog thinned out, we could
run, and the fun began!

We ended up boating 40-45 bass, with almost all of them on topwater baits, and
a handful of others on that green pumpkin grub. Joseph could not believe how
active the fish were up on top with that bright bluebird sky, and I was
surprised with it being right after that big cold front. Can’t have any more
fun than we did yesterday. This has been the best, and most sustained good
topwater bite I have ever seen on Pickwick. I have never gone this deep into
the fall without using/having to use live shad, but it just has not been
necessary this year. Continue Reading »
