Leopold film scheduled for Dorothy Buell Visitor Center
The first full-length documentary film about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold will begin a statewide series of free screenings with an Aug. 17 presentation at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center near Porter, with 14 additional screenings scheduled at DNR State Parks & Reservoirs sites.“Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time” is a production 
of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Center for Humans and Nature. The film shares highlights from Leopold’s life and extraordinary career, explaining how he shaped conservation in the 20th century and still inspires people all over the world. Best known as author of the conservation classic “A Sand County Almanac,” Leopold also is renowned as an educator, philosopher, forester, ecologist and wilderness advocate.
The Indiana DNR Lake Michigan Coastal Program (LMCP), the Center for Humans and Nature, and Indiana Dunes Tourism will present “Green Fire” at the Dorothy Buell visitor center in Porter at 1215 N Indiana 49, on Aug. 17. Later Indiana screenings run through mid-October.
The event in Porter begins at 2 p.m. EDT (1 p.m. CDT) with the film screening scheduled for 4 p.m. EDT (3 p.m. CDT). Curt Meine, the film’s on-screen guide and Leopold biographer, will attend and conduct a question-and-answer session afterward.
Registration is required and is on a first-come basis due to limited seating. Attendees should register with the LMCP via email at jorsburn@dnr.IN.gov or by phone at (219) 983-9912 by Aug. 12. An email confirmation will serve as the entrance ticket.
The film is being shown in community venues through 2011 and will be released on public television in early 2012.
“Aldo Leopold’s legacy lives on today in the work of people and organizations across the nation and around the world,” said Buddy Huffaker, executive director of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, a not-for-profit organization based in Baraboo, Wis. “What is exciting about ‘Green Fire’ is that it is more than just a documentary about Aldo Leopold; it also explores the influence his ideas have had in shaping the conservation movement as we know it today by highlighting some really inspiring people and organizations doing great work to connect people and the natural world in ways that even Leopold might not have imagined.”
“Green Fire” illustrates Leopold’s continuing influence by exploring current projects that connect people and land at the local level. Viewers will meet urban children in Chicago learning about local foods and ecological restoration; ranchers in Arizona and New Mexico who maintain healthy landscapes by working on their own properties and with their neighbors in cooperative community conservation efforts; and wildlife biologists who are bringing back threatened and endangered species, from cranes to Mexican wolves, to the landscapes where they once thrived.
“Green Fire” portrays how Leopold’s vision of a community that cares about both people and land-his call for a land ethic-ties all of these modern conservation stories together and offers inspiration and insight for the future.
