Last week’s Outdoor Horizons Radio, Tony and I had bass professional, Jason Carrao as our guest. Jason and his partner, Matt Stefan, had a great year fishing bass tournaments in the Midwest. Jason and Matt won the North American Bass Circuit spring opener on Sturgeon Bay and then went on to be Team of the Year and winning the Champioship of the NABC on the Chippewa Flowage in Hayward, Wisconsin. Jason is a local angler originally from Sauk City, Wisconsin. Jason tells us about the great year he had with his partner, Matt Stefan, and his future plans. We’ll be having Jason on the show more often and I’m positive that he can help your bass angling.
The Wisconsin deer gun season closed last Sunday and numbers were down because of the bitter cold on opening weekend when about 70% of the deer are harvested. The muzzleloader season is open for a few more days, bow hunting is open again, and there are two deer hunts in December, one just for antlerless deer. So far, about 225,000 deer have been harvested which will show a decrease of less than 10%.. The winter and spring were tough in northern Wisconsin which prevented many antlerless permits from being issued. The wolf season in zone 3 is still open with 220 wolves harvested of a quota of 251 wolves. The last of the stocked pheasants have been released and there is still pheasants on all public hunting grounds if you hunt the hard and thick cover with a good dog. The duck season is closed, but the goose season is still open with thousands of northern geese.
The ice fishing season is here with anglers on Gallus Slough, the Wisconsin River backwaters, Harmony Grove, the north end of Lake Waubesa, Green Lake, and Cherokee Marsh. Bluegills, crappies, and northern pike are active. The recent cold weather should have most waters frozen with temperatures below zero. Remember, to be safe and check out the Nebulus Floatation Device for ATV’s and snowmobiles.
