Today on Outdoor Horizons Radio our guest was the “General”, Larry Nixon. Larry recently qualified for next months Forrest Wood Cup on the Red River. Nixon was one of the speakers at the Madison Fishing Expo in February in Madison, Wisconsin. Larry is over 60 years old and its great to see him still fishing and doing well. I have a nice interview with Larry and we talked quite a bit about fishing in hot whether like most of the country has been experiencing.
We have some fishing reports from around the area and state from Guides Lee Tauchen and Ron Barefield. Ron has been fishing the Wisconsin River and doing well on both smallmouths and northern pike. Lee had a tough time on Lake Wisconsin and the Madison Lakes, but ended up fishing the weedlines on Lake Monona and doing well on perch and bluegills. Friend, Jim Kloth, has also been doing well with the perch. The weather is too warm to muskie fish, so don’t even try to fish for these fragile fish. The water is down and smallmouth, saugers, and walleyes are still active in the flowing water on the Wisconsin River. Duffy Kopf says you have to fish early in the day for some action and be off the water by 10:00 am in this hot weather. The water temperature is 85 degrees.
There are also numerous permits that have to be applied for before August 1st including; fall turkey, otter, geese in the Horicon Zone, bobcat, fisher, wolf, and sturgeon spearing on the Upriver Lakes. Remember the closing date is August 1st.
