Three feet of ice and two feet of snow lay on the lake at this time. It has been a cool March here in the northland!  When will the thaw start? Forecast says starting late this week we will start flirting with 40.  We are ready!  The sun is warming up, the wildlife is starting to move around and April is soon here. There is no holding it back; spring will be here before we know it.Last week of ice fishing for us
March 28 will be the last day of our ice fishing season.  Houses can still be left out over night on Lake of the Woods until March 31.  At this time it looks like anglers will be able to enjoy ice fishing for another couple of weeks on the lake.  Four Mile Bay Access is still in great shape, but once it does start to get soft the access at Graceton Beach is usually open for another week or so after with good ice.  Check out our spring offerings here.

The  River
The Rainy River is pretty sealed up with ice and snow up until about 5 miles east of Birchdale right now.  There are no landings open anywhere west of Industo Baudette at this time.  When will it open? Will it open fast?  Some are speculating that you should be able to push a boat out over the ice at Franz Jevne Park two miles east of Birchdale this weekend. We are hearing that based on current conditions at this time, the dam at InternationalFalls will be opened up March 31.  If this happens this should change the ice conditions on the river rapidly.  We then could expect that Birchdale landing (26 miles east of Baudette) and possibly Frontier Landing could be open within a week.

The Bite
The bite on the ice has continued to be spotty.  Some house doing well one day and then shutting off the next day.  Anglers jigging with bright colored jigs, not shiny in 26’-30’ of water did best.  Some anglers were in the mud and others on the reefs. They did equally well.  Mix of walleyes and saugers were caught.  Many larger walleyes were caught suspended 6’-8’ off of the bottom using a Vexilar device.  The afternoon bite has been favoring the morning bite. Check out some of the pictures of the latest big catches on our Facebook page here.

The northern pike bite has started to pick up in 8’-12’ of water in Four Mile Bay and Zippel Bay.  Successful anglers have been using tip ups and large shiners.
