 3/8/2013Few more inches of snow
Spring maybe in our sights but, it is definitely still winter here. We received five more inches of snow earlier this week. Forecast for the week ahead looks nice and mild with highs in the 30’s and lows in the teens. Great for some good March ice fishing!   Sounds like it will continue to keep freezing nice at night to keep the ice! We have three feet of ice right now and two to three feet of snow on the ground in the areas we fish and travel.

The best bite has been in 28-31 feet of water in the mud. Constant but not too aggressive jigging has worked well. Small gold and silver jigs or plain hooks tipped with a minnow have been working best since the storm passed though.  Afternoons, especially between 2pm-5pm have been the best bite times. Anglers have been reeling in mainly walleyes and saugers but also seeing a few jumbo perch, tullibees, nice size northern pike and few crappies.

Trails
Land and lake trails continue to be groomed. The lake trail especially the one between Wheeler’s Point and Oak Island has been getting heavy traffic. Due to the heavy snow, warmer temperatures and traffic, the groomers and resorts are doing their best at keeping it as smooth as possible.  Most of the other trails on the lake and land trails are in great condition and the weather has been great for enjoyable riding.

Good fishing, Good eats, Cold drinks and Good times
Sportsman’s is hosting a few events in March!  We invite you to join us.   March 16 & 17 we will be featuring St Patty’s Weekend specials, entertainment and contests. Spring Soft Water Fishing
Won’t be much more than a month and we will start turning the page from ice fishing to soft water fishing. The Rainy River walleye, pike and sturgeon fishing has been known to be some of the best in the state for the spring bite. On the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods, walleye season is open through April 14. Pike season never closes and sturgeon catch and release season is open through April 23, keep 1 within size limits April 24- May 7 and catch and release again May 8 through May 15. Get in on some of our spring specials with lodging as low as $39 per person per night plus tax.  We also offer guided outfitter trips, boat and motor rentals, nightly dock slips and charter fishing trips.  Guided outfitter trips are in 18’-20’ boats holding up to 4 people plus the guide starting early April.  Nightly dock rental are available once we have water at our docks usually by mid April and charter trips starting May 11. For more information about our spring packages click here.

3-8-2013The Bite
The best fishing has been in 18’-24’ of water this week on the reefs.  Late afternoon bite has been the best. Jigging with a chartreuse or gold jigs tipped with a minnow has been working the best.

Trails & Plowed Road
Land and lake trails continue to be groomed. The lake trail, especially the one betweenOakIsland across and the lake to Wheeler’s Point/South Shore has been getting heavy traffic. Due to the heavy snow, warmer temperatures and traffic, the groomers and resorts are doing their best at keeping it as smooth as possible.  Most of the other trails on the lake and land trails are in great condition and the weather has been great for enjoyable riding.  The plowed road from Young’s Bay toOakIsland continues to be in great shape at this point. We believe it will continue to stay good for at least the week ahead maybe longer, but after this weekend we suggest calling ahead before coming out just to make sure.
