Cold day in Brrrdette, MN today!
The arctic air is blasting through today, -32 wind chill right now. Sounds like our cold blast will be done after today and we will have above zero temperatures for the next five days. We love the cold for ice making, but it sure will be nice for the bones to warm back up again.

The catching is picking up!
The past few days we have started to see in increase in the number of good eater size walleyes and saugers caught.  More saugers have been in the 10”-14” range and real nice walleyes in the 16-18 inch range.  Prior to the past few days we had been seeing mostly the small walleyes and saugers and slot walleyes (walleyes larger than 19.5 inches) caught in the past few weeks.  The guides have been busy moving houses to keep on the best bite possible.  We have houses out approximately 6-9 miles from shore now.

Ashley reels in a nice 26 inch walleye!

Along with the walleyes and saugers our sleeper house division has reported a few eelpout mostly in the 24” -31”size and white fish in the 14 inch plus size have been reeled in.  The best walleye and sauger bite has been found in varying depths between 26’-31’. Sunny days have been best. Jigs with gold on them or glow in the dark, and stop signs tipped with a minnow head have been working well.  A mixture of jigging and dead sticking has been the best technique.  A recent guest of the Sleeper Division, Flint and his daughter enjoyed a fun trip recently.  Flint’s daughter out fished him and reeled in a real healthy size 24 inch walleye weighing in at 10lbs! That is a heavy 24 inch walleye! The fish was released. We thank them and all anglers abiding by the laws and releasing the slot walleyes.  With everyone’s help we will continue to see a healthy fishery for years to come.  Check out some of the recent pictures here and on our Facebook page. Lots of memories have been already made this winter. Hope you can make it here to start making yours too.

Ice
We currently have 27-32 inches of ice right now in the areas we travel and fish. Looking forward to making more to keep us going right through the end of March! On Lake of the Woods, we can have our houses out until March 31 mother nature willing.  Please keep in mind if you plan to venture out on the lake on your own to check with local guides or resorts first. Stay on the marked trails.  The entire lake does not freeze equally.  We hope will stay safe and enjoy the great outdoors!

Lighter bite the past week but still getting some nice fish.
Afternoon bite has been best. Anglers have been getting a mix of walleyes and saugers along with a few northern pike.  Buck shots and glow in the dark jigs tipped with a minnow have been working best.

Ice
We currently have two feet of ice now in the areas we travel and fish around OakIsland.  The ice road out to the island from Young’s Bay is in great condition. If you are looking for an adventure, come on out and stay for few nights.  Give us a call for reservations 800-772-8411 and then follow the signs from Young’s Bay right to our front door. Prefer to leave the driving to us? Sure! We would be happy to pick you up at our south shore property; Sportsman’s Lodge and brings you up to Oak Island via track vehicle. That is an adventure in itself and you have no Canadian border to cross. For rates and reservations for these trips, click here.
