Reeling in some fish
Anglers are catching quite a few 10-12 inch saugers and 18-24 inch walleyes along with some walleyes in the 14”-18” range.  Fishing has been a little spotty.  Dead sticking has worked best. Swedish pimples, plain hooks, gold jigs, and chubby darters tipped with a chub minnow has been working best.  The guides are shuffling houses constantly to stay on the best action.  The best bite has been in 26’-30’ of water right now.  Vexilar/Fish Finder always seem to help anglers success.  The afternoon bite has been favoring over the mornings, especially for the walleye bite.  Check out some of the recent pictures of the big walleye catches.

Ice Conditions
We currently have 22-25 inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel on the lake.  The Rainy River out in front of the lodge has 9 inches of ice and on the trail to town 14 inches.  Sounds like below zero temperatures are coming this weekend and for the week ahead. Subzero temperatures should help the ice building and give us the needed ice to keep on ice fishing until late March.  If you are looking to go out on the ice on your own, please keep in mind the entire lake does not freeze equally.
Your best bet to staying safe is to stay on the marked trail and ask local resorts and guides about the latest conditions before venturing out.

Trail Conditions
Weather has been windy yesterday and today so the snow has drifted quite a bit. We received a few more inches of snow yesterday.  We have about a foot of snow altogether right now.
Lake Trails –  The groomers will be out tomorrow to pack everything down again on the super loop: Wheeler’s Point to Baudette, Wheeler’s Point to Warroad, Warroad to Oak Island and Oak Island to Wheeler’s Point.  Riders have reported that the trails are decent.  We could use a little more snow but overall good riding.
Land Trails – For the latest land trail conditions go to the Lake of the Woods Drifter’s Club page here for the southern half of Lake of the Woods.  For the northern area on the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods near the Northwest Angle, click here for the Northwest Angle Edge Riders information.

The latest…..
Anglers have been very happy with their catch near OakIsland recently.  Mostly walleyes 15”-18”, few perch, burbot and northern pike have been caught this week.  Hard bottom in 22’-24’ has been the best.  Pink and gold jigs and white and red jigs have been hot this week.

Ice Conditions
We currently have 20 inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel on the lake. Subzero temperatures should help the ice building and give us the needed ice to keep on ice fishing until late March.

Ice Road to the Island
The ice road to OakIsland is in good shape. A bit drifted the past few days due to the high winds but nice and wide.  Follow the signs out and come on out!
