|Sportsman’s Ice & Snow Report
Happy New Year! Another year is in the books. We are looking forward to 2013. We wish everyone good fishing, good times and good health! Hope you can make it over to our neck of the woods in 2013. The walleyes are waiting! The Bite The fishing has been a real active this week. We are seeing several 7-10 inch saugers, a decent amount of 12-14 inch saugers, fair amount of 12-18 inch walleyes and some real nice 22 inch plus walleyes come through the holes. We have moved several of our houses into deeper waters and that has produced well. We are currently finding the best bite in 27’-30’ just outside of Pine Island. Charmer and stop sign lures have been hot as well as anything that has a red glow. Chubs are the bait of choice. A Vexilar/fish finder always helps your odds. We have a few Vexilars available to rent if you do not have one your own. They are in demand so make sure you call ahead to reserve if you are interested.

We are getting more and more ice every day and conditions continue to get better. In the areas we travel and fish we have 10-18 inches at this time. We are using a combination of jeeps and bombardiers to transport guests to the fish houses right now.
We received another 1-2 inches of snow yesterday. I would say we have about 6-8 inches total right now on the ground. The lake trails are scheduled for their first grooming on Friday, Jan 4 including the entire “SUPER LOOP” from Wheeler’s Point to Warroad, Warroad to Oak Island/NW Angle and Oak Island/NW Angle to Wheeler’s Point. Trail riders are encouraged to stay on the trail and watch for ice chunks for the best riding experience. We received some snow over the weekend. The lake has 2-4 inches on it and the land 3-5 at this time. At this time the land trails are not groomed. A little more snow and they should be ready for the year.

It’s never too early to plan your spring or summer trip!
The extended walleye season we enjoy on the Canadian border allows for a phenomenon not available for much of the state. The warming weather and increased currents at the beginning of April work to open the Rainy River just as the walleyes are beginning their spring run. The action is fast, and the fish are huge, pulled up one after another.
Spring also brings our annual Sturgeon Tournament! Over $4,800 in cash and prizes are on the table and only a few spots are still open. Click here for more information or to sign up.
If summer is more your style…
