Check the Freezer for Summer Time Lake Trout
Jim Hudson

Wow, what a scorcher! 2012 has been the year of the heat. Goofy weather patterns have been the norm, especially heat related for a lot of us here in the Mid-west. Record temps and ice-out dates this spring and now a summer coupled with extreme heat and drought throughout most of the region. Definitely not friendly to those that like temps that hover around freezing, such as us ice-heads, nor to our fishy friend, the Lake Trout.
And just like us, when mother-nature cranks the heat, these cold loving fish head to the air conditioning. And in their lives, this means deep into the abyss. Lakers are very sensitive to water temperature, wanting to be snug as a bug in water that is 50 degrees or cooler, with 42 being their optimum operating temp.
So, this means fishing for them would be tougher in the summer, right? Most folks that I talk to think so, but, it is actually the opposite. For me, it’s much, much easier, as the water column has shrunk and the places for the Trout to hide has gotten smaller. Just like all fish species, once the water temps warm, and most lakes stratify with a thermocline, fishing actually can become a lot more easier, as fish are now pushed into a tighter zone that they are comfortable in, making them a lot easier to find. This goes for the smallest of lakes to the biggest of the Great Lakes – as long as they stratify.
