Whitetails Unlimited Sponsors Wisconsin DNR’s Learn to Hunt Program
Whitetails Unlimited continues its longtime sponsorship of the Wisconsin DNR’s Learn to Hunt program, held at the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center in central Wisconsin. During August and September, 2011, the WDNR held four Learn to Hunt workshops. These workshops are for youth hunters, ages 12-15, and beginner adults with no hunting experience.
Each hunter is accompanied by a chaperone or mentor to the workshops and during the actual hunt. The one-day workshops offer instruction on ethical and responsible hunting techniques, deer biology and management, firearm safety, field dressing, orienteering and other important aspects of hunting.
Hunters and their chaperones will return the first weekend of November for the special hunt conducted within the 14.3 square-mile Sandhill Wildlife Area. The 9,150-acre tract surrounded by a 9-foot high “deer proof” fence, is one of the largest areas in North America with an enclosed white-tailed deer herd regulated by public hunting. In the past, 50 to 60 deer were harvested by successful novice hunters each year on the Sandhill Wildlife Area property.
“This program is an ideal way to introduce new participants to whitetail hunting,” said WTU Executive Director Pete Gerl, “and make their first experience a safe and enjoyable one.” WTU is also the official sponsor of Sandhill’s youth essay contest, and is providing branded merchandise for the contest winners. “We’re always happy to encourage beginning deer hunters of any age.”
Founded in 1982, Whitetails Unlimited is a national nonprofit conservation organization. Our mission is to raise funds in support of education, habitat enhancement and acquisition, and the preservation of the hunting tradition for the benefit of the white-tailed deer and other wildlife. When it comes to the whitetail and its environment, WTU’s degree of professionalism and dedication has earned us the reputation of being the nation’s premier whitetail organization.
