Lake Michigan Fishing Report From Captain Andy Carraro and We’ll Sea Charters 5-31-2011

After all the miserable weather, the fishing off Kenosha is finally improving. The water is still cold, 43-48 degrees, and a bit dirty. There is no mud line but the colored water extends out almost to the “Hill”. Finding a temp break and a bit cleaner water was the ticket over the Holiday week end. Many nice catches of Cohos, along with some bonus Kings and Rainbows were caught.AndySalmonSpring11.jpg With the colored water, dodgers with darker colored flies were best for the coho. Blue/gold, green/gold (Packer) black/pink, and copper colors were best. Long leads of 40 to 50 feet behind the planer boards with 1/2 ounce of lead seamed to work best for me. With the cold water, the fish were scattered any where from the surface down to 35 feet. The larger fish seamed to be a bit deeper in the water column. The Kings and Rainbows favored standard size spoons. The alewives are numerous but on the small side. Once you catch a fish, check the stomach to see what size bait fish they are feeding on and match the size of the spoon to the bait. Again, due to the dirty water, dark colors with a little glow worked best. With the weather stabilizing, the fishing will continue to improve. Baring any more Nor’Easters, the water should steadily clear up.

COngratulations to PAtrick THomas of Elk Grove, IL. Patrick landed two nice Kings, one which weighed in at 18 1/2 pounds and also a nice rack of Coho. With spring Kings already approaching the 20 pound mark, it should be a fantastic summer of fishing.

See you on the water,

Capt. Andy Carraro
