DEERFIELD - Stable owners in eastern Dane County think a cougar attacked and killed their horse this week.Cougar Hauge Small

The state Department of Natural Resources says it isn’t quite ready to attribute the gory attack to a cougar. It says it’s still looking for clues.

A worker at Freedom Stables in the Town of Deerfield found the horse dead Wednesday afternoon with its throat ripped out.

The horse’s veterinarian says its major neck artery and airway were deeply cut, as if with a single swipe. He says horses can sometimes cut themselves on machinery but not this deep.

The stable owners told WMTV-TV they found tracks that suggest a large cat was near.

DNR warden Barbara Wold says investigators are still seeking conclusive evidence to confirm that.
