WEEKLY OUTDOOR AND FISHING REPORTS, and calendar highlights:
***Eagle River, Wis. (VILAS COUNTY) — as of April 22, 2010:
Perch and crappies coming in shallow, with perch action best, and
bluegills remain deeper in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.
Water temps still quite cool in the Eagle River area.
With the cool nights and the daytime temperatures not rising exceptionally
high, water temps remain fairly cool in the Eagle River area. That means
that fishing while OK, has not hit its peak.
Best waters to fish right now are the Eagle River Chain of 28 lakes (largest
freshwater chain of lakes in the world), and the Eagle River, itself. Both
generally have the warmest water in the area, and that means better fishing
action.
Crappies in the Eagle River area are in 8 to 10 feet of water during the
morning hours, and as water heats up from the sun, they move in shallower to
3-5 feet of water. Fish around stumps, mud, spots where the new coontails
are just starting to green up, and some of the new weeds (the new weeds are
only 3 to 6 inches tall, but are attracting the fish, as minnows are in
those spots). Use a crappie minnow on a slip bobber. Crappies are going
8-10 inches, give or take.
The perch in the Eagle River are in 3-5 feet of water, and are providing the
best action right now.
Fish around old weeds, and in the mud, around stumps,
drowned wood, and brush piles. Use a crappie minnow, red worm or a chunk of
crawler. Anglers are reporting perch going in the 8 to 9 inch range.
Not much being heard about bluegills right now in the Eagle River area.
There are some real small gills being caught shallow, but most still remain
a bit deeper and have not yet come into the shallower water. Stay tuned.

***(Report on Central Wisconsin Lakes AND the Wisconsin River in Wisconsin’s
Marathon and Lincoln Counties near Mosinee and Wausau), — as of April 22,
2010 (Editor’s note: The daily bag limit for walleyes on many lakes and the
Wisconsin River in Central Wisconsin (always check the regulations on the
particular water, first) is five (5) fish per day throughout the year while
the daily bag limit for walleye in many areas north of Mosinee and Wausau
may only be two to three fish because of Native American spearing
initiatives and the resulting DNR “quota limits”).
SPECIAL EDITOR’S NOTE: Don’t forget that unlike most all other areas of
Wisconsin, the walleye and northern season on many of the waters in the
Central Wisconsin area DO NOT CLOSE. You don’t have to just settle for
panfish! Check ahead to make sure the water you want to fish is indeed one
of those that remain “open.”
Bass on fire, with walleyes and spawning crappies coming on strong,
along with the wild turkey season very successful, all going on in and
amidst the lakes and the Wisconsin River of Wisconsin’s Marathon and Lincoln
Counties (near Mosinee and Wausau). Remember: The walleye and northern
seasons REMAIN OPEN on many of the waters in Central Wisconsin.
Fish becoming active as water warms in the Central Wisconsin area.
Bass are on fire with the warmer water in the Central Wisconsin area. Top
water baits and small swim baits worked over rocks in 1 to 3 feet of water
are catching a lot of bass right now.
Walleyes in the Central Wisconsin area are coming on strong. Look for
submerged timber in 8 to 12 feet of water, and work it thoroughly with 1/8th
ounce jigs tipped with minnows.
Crappies are spawning in the Central Wisconsin area, and can be readily
taken with small minnows suspended below slip bobbers and worked in and
around stumps and wood in backwater areas of the Wisconsin River.
The spring wild turkey season in the Central Wisconsin area is proving very
successful. Hunters have a lot to look forward to for the remaining spring
season. Target field edges early and late in the day, and work hardwood
ridges and cedar swamps during mid day hours.
