North Dakota Deer Tests Positive for CWD
RALEIGH, N.C. - The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is notifying citizens that a free-ranging mule deer in North Dakota has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). This is the first confirmed case of CWD in North Dakota.Anyone bringing a cervid (deer, elk, moose, or caribou) carcass from North Dakota, the 17 other states or two Canadian provinces where CWD has been detected, must follow North Carolina processing and packaging regulations.
Other states where CWD has been detected include Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Illinois, Utah, West Virginia, New York, Kansas, Michigan, Virginia and Missouri. It has also been detected in Canada’s Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces.
To date, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has tested over 4,450 captive and free-ranging cervids in North Carolina for CWD and no CWD has been found.
CWD affects the nervous system of members of the deer family and is always fatal. Scientists have found no evidence that CWD can be transmitted naturally to humans or livestock.
