FISHAPALOOZA Ice Fishing Event to Host Hunt.Fish.Feed. Event
New Berlin, Wisconsin - Sportsman Channel’s Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM initiative is partnering with Comcast, Safari Club International Foundation and FISHAPALOOZA to help feed those in need at the Catholic Charities Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul, Minn., on Sunday, February 28, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM initiative is a unique outreach program that taps an underutilized food source-game meat and fish donated by sportsmen-to feed those struggling with hunger across America.Unique to this Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM event is the donation of fish caught at FISHAPALOOZA, one of the region’s largest ice-fishing tournaments, taking place at the Forest Lake VFW Post on Saturday, February 27. Contestants can donate fish to the Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM initiative by adding their Minnesota fishing license number to their tickets before weigh-in. Alongside the fish caught at the FISHAPALOOZA tournament, the Twin Cities event will also serve venison, a highly nutritious food source, which will be donated by local hunters from the region in cooperation with Sportsman Channel, Comcast and Safari Club International Foundation’s Sportsmen Against HungerTM.
“This is a unique opportunity for us to connect anglers with our Hunt.Fish.Feed efforts to serve fish alongside our venison dishes,” said Todd Hansen, Sr. Vice President of Sportsman Channel. “A special thanks to our partners, Comcast, Sportsmen Against Hunger and FISHAPALOOZA for helping us accomplish this goal and bring awareness to sportsmen’s efforts to help those in need.”
The crew from In-Fisherman Ice Fishing Guide show will also be on-site at the tournament on Saturday and during the preparation of the meal on Sunday. Footage from both events will appear in an episode of the show scheduled to air on Sportsman Channel at the end of March.
“Comcast is proud to partner with Sportsman Channel in this important effort to raise awareness of hunger in our area,” said Bill Wright, Senior Vice President, Comcast Twin Cities Region. “Comcast employees are making a difference in our communities every day, and this is one more way we can help make the Twin Cities a better place to live.”
Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM kicked off a multiple-city tour last month in Las Vegas and will travel to 10 U.S. cities to feed the needy and bring awareness to the fight against hunger.
“We have three times as many families seeking shelter now as we did a year ago,” said Kathy Klement of Mary’s Place, a local shelter, in an interview with NBC affiliate, KARE 11, late last year. There were more than 9,000 homeless in Minnesota as of 2006 according to an Amherst H Wilder Foundation survey. The foundation completed a follow-up study in fall 2009 with the results to be released later this year, but the group says that the revised homeless numbers will show the effects of the recent recession.
