Coyote by Todd Koehn

gengberg February 5th, 2010

I just got an email from an old fishing friend, Todd Koehn, of Antigo, Wisconsin. Todd was a excellent angler and knew the Wisconsin River in northern Wisconsin very well. He has a book he wrote, Mepps Fishing the World’s #1 Lure, which did well. Age has caught up with Todd, but he’s still working the outdoors which is great to see. Here is Todd’s email and coyote photo.

As a long time writer my career as a professional fishing guide came to an end recently.  This old guide has two artificial hips & a knee which has changed both my fishing & hunting practices.coyote todd Koehn Small   Not being mobil means success in hunting now requires long range shooting.  Locating predators is by glassing fields with Steiner Nighthunter binoculars.  It is not uncommon to shoot upwards of 600 yards for both fox & coyotes.  On the Feb 1, 2010 I shot this 35 lb male coyote.  This was like I just boated an equally heavy wall hanger musky!  After dropping this predator I used a rangefinder and it was 237 yards to where it laid.  I led this coyote approximately 5 feet taking in account for speed this animal was running.  If you have ever had the opportunity to make shots like this you can appreciate the shot placement and judgment it takes.  The combo which made this kill possible was a Savage .223 Model 12 Varmint scoped with a Leupold 4.5-14X50mm with a varmint reticle.  This varmint reticle assist the rifleman with a custom designed sighting grid for estimating for both wind and for leading moving game.  Like a musky fisherman who tied their own buck-tail catching a trophy on their lure,  this coyote was taken with my own handload of Varget powder and Barnes 50 gr Varmint Grenade.  The only other helpful info I can offer other than having adequate equipment is practice_practice_practice!

Here is Todd’s hunting companions, the Antigo Bryant Flats Gang.
