My Fishing Partner Lake Winnebago Fishing Report by Mark Schram 1-24-2010

Winnebago Fishing Report 1-24-10     Mild temperatures arrived into the area, and fishermen flocked to Lake
Winnebago during the week. Ice depths continued to stay in the 13-17 inch
ranges, but there has been a slight breakdown in the ice due to the warmer
temperatures. Forecasters predict continued warm weather for the near
future and even hint at the possibility of rain. There has been a shifting
of the ice to a minor degree, so make sure to stay aware of your
surroundings, as they may not be the same as your previous trip. Water
clarity is still just ok. Travel is relatively easy in most cases.

Unfortunately, we lost another individual this week on the lake. Remember,
safety is the first priority while on the ice. My sympathies go out to
the Fond du Lac family whom has lost a loved one.

With the heavy traffic on the lake, there is a smorgasbord of reports. In
some areas I am getting reports of great fishing and rotten fishing on the
same day in the same location. Overall most anglers have struggled over
the week.

The lake breaks down this way for activity:

Brothertown and Gladwater Beach have had the best action on the lake.
There are two small cities of shacks in these areas. One at approximately
1 mile out of Brother town and another at the 2-3 mile mark. The group at
one mile is seeing a bit more walleye activity. The group at 3 miles out
is hammering white bass and perch. Metallic colored spoons have been a
great choice this week, usually tipped with a minnow head.

Merritt Street (Oshkosh) has had a walleye and perch bite working at about
one mile from the landing. There also have been some walleyes working in
the deep water at the 16-18 foot ranges.

Perch are also being caught in the Fond du Lac area in the 9-11 foot
transition zones. Some of these perch have had Jumbo size, and can be
enticed with small white colored baits or jigging Rapalas. Another solid
area is just in front of Hounsell’s Greenhouse in North Fond du Lac.‎

The small bay just north of Fugleberg Park launch has reported some limits
of perch. This is a gold spoon bite, tipped with waxies.

Some of the areas which have been slow include Garlic Island, Kalibus, Long
Point, Asylum Bay and Wendt’s.

Lake Poygan’s hot bite has waned some this week. There are still perch
being taken on the western side of the lake, and white bass along the
southern shore. A few more pike are being reported in the last week than
in the previous weeks. Overall, it was pretty slow in this neck of the
woods this week.
