Steve Hacker Guide Service Fishing Report from Lake Wilson 12-14-09
gengberg December 15th, 2009
Date fished: Dec. 14
Location: Wilson Lake
Weather: BEAUTIFUL
Water temp: 49.4
Water visibility: 3 or 4 inchesDon Rego has been calling and watching the weather, trying to plan a trip down from Chicago for the past few weeks. Weather has–for the most part–been pretty miserable here the past two weeks, with brutal high winds, flooding rains, and very cold. But the extended forecast last week looked good for Monday, Dec. 14, so he called again and we set it up. Only issue was that we had extreme flooding (again!) here last week, and Friday’s newspaper headlines were that the McFarland Park campground was being evacuated due to flooding (much of the park is still closed today, Tuesday). So Don brought his Father (also Don) and we decided to give Wilson Lake a try.![]()
We were definitely blessed, as the weather WAS beautiful, as it was 53 degrees when we launched, and the official high for the day was 72 degrees, just two degrees shy of the record for the date. Water was dirtier than hoped for, as the 6 inches of rain that fell just east of here last week had the visiblilty down in the 3 to 4 inches range. But the water temp was 49.4, which is “tolerable” for mid December bass fishing around here.
Best baits were Strike King spinnerbaits, both the 1/2 oz. Premier Plus and the larger Bottom Dweller, in whites and white/chartreuse patterns. We fished the 1/2 oz. in depths to about 10-12 feet, and put on the Bottom Dweller when we moved out to fish in 14-16 feet of water. I was a little surprised, with the water as dirty as it was, that Don almost immediately caught a nice fish right away out in that deeper water on his 3/4 oz. Bottom Dweller. I would have thought that the fish would have pulled up pretty tight and shallow in that dirty water. I had no luck at all on soft plastics in areas where I normally do under these conditions, but did scratch up a few more on a crankbait.
We lost a few, but ended up with a livewell full of really nice fish–way more than they could hold for pictures–and a dandy 5 fish string. The small fish just were not biting, as we only caught one fish, maybe two, under 3 pounds. All fish released in great shape after pix.
Our best wishes to you and yours for a Merry and Meaningful Christmas.
God bless,
Steve, Elliott, and Jonathan Hacker
