Outdoor Horizons Radio 12-12-09
gengberg December 12th, 2009
This week on Outdoor Horizons Radio Wally Banfi and Gary Engberg do the show with Tony Puccio in Mexico. Wally and Gary talk about the coming ice fishing season highlighting the safety aspect of fishing “hard water.” Though, there are ice anglers out on Whalen’s Grade on Lake Wisconsin and other smaller and shallower bodies of water. Wally gives his early ice fishing best locations and how he rigs for bluegills and crappies.
I just heard from friend, “Doc” Pine, who is fishing Cherokee Marsh, and catching both crappies and bluegills. Doc says the majority of the fish are of good size. Be safe above all.
The guys discuss the late pheasant season and the good hunting that is still available on many state public hunting grounds.
The main problem now is mobility with the heavy snow. This is the last days of the 4-day antlerless hunt nd I’ve seen few hunters out in the deep snow and cold temperatures. The ducck season closed and the goose season is open a few more days.
The eagles are back in the area for those who want to see these beautiful birds.
Tom Gelb, a “old-school’ angler from Eagle River will speak this week at the Capital City Chapter of Muskies, Inc. at Madison’s East Side Businessman Club, Monday, December 14, 2009 at 7:00 pm. Gelb has caught 2 5o pound muskies the last two years row-trolling in the frigid last days of the season. Remember that the muskie season south of Highway 10 is open for the 1st time till December 31.
Wally and Gary talk about the failed attempt to raise the muskie minimum on the Wisconsin River from 34 inches to 50 inches. The Conservation Congress voted it down with a voice vote and not knowing much about the local waters and how these 20 year old and older fish are being kept for eating! Release all muskies to be caught again.
Wally and Gary give some ideas for Christmas gifts for the sportsman. There is always some good gifts for the angler and hunter.
