Corn Harvest Running Late and May Be Affecting the Deer Harvest 11-24-09
gengberg November 24th, 2009
Here is letter sent to Laurel Steffes of the DNR from Hoard’s Dairyman in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.
Hoard’s Dairyman called me this a.m. asking us to please spread the word that there is a lot of corn still standing in the fields and farmers are out harvesting.
This has implications for hunting — deer bedded down, lack of visibility of other hunters, and farmers out in the fields during hunting season. Anything you could do to spread the word in your blogs and columns would be good. Thanks.

Subject: Corn harvest running late
Dear Laurel,
Good to talk to you this morning. Attached you will find the Monday, November 23 Crop Progress. At the bottom of page 1, you will find 2009 (59 percent), 2008 (81 percent), and 5-year average (87 percent) for corn harvest. As you can see, we are way behind. One the way to work, a 30-mile stretch from East Troy to Fort Atkinson, I saw 9 combines harvesting corn.
Yesterday, I was in Manitowoc County, same situation. Withing a 3-mile radius of my father’s farm there is 500 acres of standing corn. In my opinion, this is a major contributing factor for the slow opening weekend.
With best wishes.
Corey
