Lake Michigan Fishing Report from Captain Andy Carraro 8-31-09
gengberg August 31st, 2009
High wind and waves kept most of us, including me, off Lake Michigan this week end. Those hardy enough with larger boats were greeted by 4-6 foot swells topped of with 3-4 foot waves. Not much fun. Several cases of “Lake Michigan Flu” were reported.![]()
This weeks report is complements of Captains Mark, Ed and Steve. All of which braved the conditions over the week end.
Several days of east winds raised the on shore water temperatures back into the low 60’s from the high 40’s of last week. As predicted, the fish moved back to the deep water. The few fish that were caught were found from 60 to 120 feet of water. Baits varied from day to day with dark colored spoons taking the majority of the fish. Fish were also on the small side. The Captains reported Dipsey Divers out producing down riggers. Weather was to rough to run any planer boards.
As the weather slowly improves this week, look for the fish to remain in the deeper water and fishing to steadily improve. Boats which were out today (Monday) reported steady fishing from the “Hill” out to 120 feet. Larger fish were found in the deeper water around structure breaks. Most Kings were male (If that makes any sense) This is good news as the larger females have not as yet begun to stage for the spawn.
There are only a few good weeks of Salmon fishing left. Now is the time to catch the big one!
