Delta Waterfowl USFWS Regulations Committee Approves Scaup Harvest Strategy

gengberg June 30th, 2008

For Immediate Release…Editors: For more information, contact Delta Waterfowl Scientific Director Dr. Frank Rohwer at 701-471-6185, or see www.deltawaterfowl.org.Bag Limit Could be Reduced to One Bird for Upcoming Season

Bismarck, N.D–American waterfowl hunters are one step closer to facing a reduced scaup bag limit for the upcoming hunting season.

That’s because the Service Regulations Committee of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) approved a harvest strategy last week that paves the way for the bag limit reduction. The move was opposed by Delta Waterfowl, the state wildlife agencies in Louisiana, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota, as well as the Mississippi and Central Flyway Councils and the California Waterfowl Association.

“The decision is very disheartening, but not all hope is lost,” said Delta President Rob Olson, noting that the scaup bag limit for Mississippi and Central Flyway hunters could be reduced from two birds to one. “A final decision to reduce the scaup bag limit won’t be decided until later this summer, but this move does send a clear message to scaup hunters that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is intent on reducing the bag limit, despite strong opposition from Delta and others. We believe the harvest model used by the Service may be inadequate and should be fully reexamined before any reduction in the scaup bag limit occurs.” –>

ASA to unveil top 10 innovative fishing products at ICAST 2008

June 30, 2008, Alexandria, VA - Seventy-five years ago, the sportfishing industry united to form what is now the American Sportfishing Association (ASA). This July, the industry will unite once again for the 51st International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST) - the world’s largest sportfishing trade show - from July 16-18, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Produced by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the 2008 show floor is sold out for the seventh year in a row with over 431 exhibitors filling over 1,350 booths across 350,000 square feet of floor space. ICAST represents the cornerstone of the sportfishing industry, driving sportfishing companies’ product sales year round. Approximately 10,000 attendees are expected in Las Vegas to attend ICAST and the Marine Aftermarket Accessories Tradeshow (MAATS) which is co-locating with ICAST at the Convention Center.

ICAST is the only place where attendees and exhibitors can see sportfishing manufacturers’ entire product lines; save money and time by taking advantage of ICAST-only specials offered by over 100 exhibitors; network with a veritable “who’s who” in the sportfishing industry; and help shape the 2009 consumer market by voting for the prestigious New Product Showcase “Best of Show” awards in 17 product categories, as well as the coveted overall “Best of Show” award. Local Column River Currents 6-29-08

gengberg June 29th, 2008

Recently, I’ve mentioned that many of us who live on the Lower Wisconsin River, west of the Prairie du Sac Dam, where lucky that the river’s waters receded before reaching our homes. Many, who live farther down the river, did not have the same good fortune and individuals from Mazomanie to the Mississippi River experienced severe flooding and considerable damage to homes, businesses, and personal property.Flood spring Green Volunteers 6-28-08

From the very first stages of flooding to the massive clean-up left after the river receded, a local group, Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway or FLOW, has helped many and played a major role in getting people back on their feet. Flood ‘08 Car and garageIn case you’re not familiar with FLOW, it is an organization which was originally formed 25 years ago in support of a then new DNR project which we now know as the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway.” The group was originally opposed by many local citizens and landowners as a governmental intrusion to taking over people’s private property and civil liberties. But, in the end, the support of FLOW and a compromise bill passed by the state legislature insured the creation of “Riverway” project in 1989. The new law created the Riverway Board to regulate and administrate the scenic protection regulations. Now, the board is officially called the Wisconsin State Riverway Board and represents Dane, Sauk, Iowa, Grant, Richland, and Crawford Counties. Continue Reading »

Local Column River Currents 6-24-08

This is the time of the year when many groups, organizations, and clubs are having their annual fishing events trying to get children outdoors and involved in a “healthy” and family orientated sport like fishing. Various children’s events that I’ve been involved in locally include; the “Family Fishing Day” in Mazomanie,Kid’s Fishing Day Madison Yahara June ‘08 the “Kid’s Fishing Day” in Madison, “Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs” in the Sauk Prairie school district, and coming up the first weekend in August will be the Annual Wilderness Fish and Game’s “Take an Adult Fishing Tournament.” Many youngsters learn the basics of fishing from these and similar events, but many don’t get out fishing with their family or friends at other times of the year.Kid’s Fishing Day Yahara ‘08 I can see that some children may not enjoy ice fishing in the snow and cold of winter, but there are at least six months of the year when kids could and should be taking advantage of the fishing skills that they’ve learned at the various events held throughout the year in most area communities. gengberg June 28th, 2008

Volunteers can come and go whenever it works best for them of course, but we’ll be starting between 8:30 and 9:00 am at the corner of Hwy 23 and County G, (just a bit North of Hwy 14).Flood spring Green Volunteers 6-28-08 I’ve obtained permission from the new school bus company to have volunteers park their vehicles across the street in the parking area by the school buses. Please note that we are not “Highly Organized”, but “Loosely Organized”. I will share with you what needs to be done, but everyone is welcome to chime in on how to get it done. If you don’t think you can do something safely… don’t do it!

BALLA & BYRNE CAPTURE DIVISION TEAM OF THE YEAR TITLE

– PRESENTED BY MERCURY MOTORS

Oshkosh, WI — Local Wisconsin anglers Randy Seidl (Appleton) and Joe Knowles

(Sherwood) proved that a rookie team can step into a big national tournament like the MWC

and grab a win from a spectacular field of competitors! Seidl and Knowles landed a second

best basket on day one, 19.23 pounds, and the third best basket on day two, 18.97 pounds, to

capture the lead and win the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit tournament, June 21st and 22nd

on Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh. This was not only their first circuit victory, but amazingly, their first MWC

tournament. Period. The duo was as shocked as anyone that they actually were being handed the “big check”

on stage for $28,600 when it was all over. “We sure didn’t expect this to happen,” shared Randy Seidl. Joe

Knowles chimed in, “It’s just unreal. There are a lot of good fishermen in this tournament – and we were fishing

with the big boys this time. But hey, we’re locals and maybe we had an edge on this one.” Continue Reading »

Spring Green Flood Assistance 6-27-08

gengberg June 27th, 2008

At a Town of Spring Green meeting last night… displaced flood victims requested help with removing their undamaged possessions from their homes this coming Saturday. This area of devastation seems to be absent in the news media, so please share this email with your contacts and other groups you belong to.   The plan is to use tractors and trailers to ferry volunteers up to the homes, then load the trailers with salvageable belongings. Volunteers may have to wade through a little water, nothing deeper than regular muck boots can handle though. If you’re not comfortable going into the flooded area… you can stay at the dry end to help transfer stuff to the vehicles that will be hauling it away. Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date, bring your boots and gloves. Bottled water and masks will be provided. Feel free to call my cell phone number with questions or to double-check before you drive out if weather conditions seem questionable. Timm Zumm: 608-575-0325
