Today, March 28th, 2008 at 10:00 AM the Department of Natural Resources was going to put the extra and left-over spring turkey permits on sale over-the-counter to the public. Many turkey hunters took time off work and other activities to go and try and purchase an extra permit or if they didn’t apply earlier, their first permit. The DNR said that it had over 56,000 permits to sell. The over-the-counter permits sell for $10.00 for residents and $15.00 for non-residents. A complete list of units and the permits that are available can be found on the turkey hunting page on the DNR website.
The Wilderness Fish and Game store in Sauk City, Wisconsin had over 50 people waiting in line to purchase what was left in spring permits. But, the state automatic system or ALS crashed and as of 4:30 PM, no one was able to purchase a permit at the Sauk City location. A press release sent out by the DNR admitted the problems and said that they were sorry. They said that they were able to process 1,000 permits per hour and later 3,000 per hour. But, not in Sauk City! Hunters were not happy with this malfunction, particularly when they took time off from work and other activities to try and buy their permits. By Saturday, the ALS system was working and hunters could get their permits in a timely manner.
